You have a great idea. And you could very easily make it happen, the folks you have that have already showed support would just need to write or contact the state congressman and senator. You would be suprised at how much could happen if these supporters did just that. Good Luck and it most defintetly would help that area out in so many ways. "GNGBU"

IT COULD BE GOOD FOR THE CITY OF FREEPORT...IT WOULD BE FUNNY IF THEY COULD SHOW UP FROM ALL THAT WAY BUT THE DAMN MAYOR CAN'T GET BACK TO US IN ONE WEEK ABOUT A PROBLEM. HE WON'T GET MY VOTE NEXT TIME AROUND.

It would take the heat off the head of the housing authority and the presence of the security service agents would boost the coffers of the local restaurants and hotels.

The proposed Freeport Debate is both great for the area as in the best interest of the country.

I was born and raised in Freeport and have always felt that the community should do more to foster the historic value it holds. A presidential debate would be a start. The tourism dollars are being spent, just not in Freeport. With the shrinking of the industrial base in Freeport, now would be the time to explore reshaping Freeport into a tourist-based community. Casey Meyers'ideas would be a great place to start!

I believe it would not only be a good thing, but would give the candidates a chance to show the folks in Northern Illinois their true colors therefore giving the voters a chance to really see for themselves who the prospective candidates are. As far as the candidates, it might inspire them, and cause them to reflect on how much like the debate of history past this one is like. Who knows they might even reconsider one or two of their main points just because of the historical significance of the first debate.

I do not know if you tought of it, but you might consider polling the city as to whether its citizens know the significance of what those statues down by Union Dairy represent. When I moved to Freeport four years ago I already understood what the Lincoln-Douglas debate was, where and when it occured, and what its historical significance was. I was excited to be so close to such an important landmark in American History. Now I am depressed to know that hardly anyone knows or cares. Doesn't the Freeport school system teach the significance of this city in the development of this great nation. Sorry to rant like this, but I care about our history and would rather see more people realize Freeport's importance and want to bring a debate here for posterity's sake, not just to "cash in" on it. thank you for your time

FREEPORT IS MY HOME TOWN SO I AM WELL AWARE OF THE HISTORICAL VALUE OF THE LINCOLN/DOUGLAS DEBATE, NOT ONLY FOR THE POLITICAL SIGNIFICANCE BUT THE IMPACT THIS DEBATE HAD ON THE FREEPORT AREA. IT IS MY PERCEPTION THAT A GORE/BUSH DEBATE WOULD BE IF HISTORICAL BENEFIT FOR FREEPORT IF IT WERE BROUGHT IN FOR THE PURPOSE OF A POLITICAL DEBATE ON TODAYS ISSUES, AND NOT SOLELY BECAUSE OF A PAST DEBATE. THE IMPACT ON THE YOUTH OF BEING ABLE TO PARTICIATE OR BE A PART OF A
DEBATE PROCESS WOULD BE PRICELESS. THIS WOULD FACILITATE AN UNDERSTANDING THE THE IMPORTANCE OF POTICAL DEBATE WHILE ASSISTING IN PROVIDING A CLEARER PICTURE OF THE PROCESS OF THE LINCOLN/DOUGLAS DEBATE.

In this time of many people longing for an election based on issues, and not on media campaigns, why not return to the Nation's Heartland and specifically, Freeport, Illinois, which is one of the places of one of the most significant issue-based debates (Lincoln-Douglas 1858 race for the U. S. Senate)?
