It would be good if you can manage to get their canned responses taken away from them so that you can have a real debate. Unfortunately they are only going to say what they think we want to hear for them to get elected.

I agree that a debate would be more interesting that all the summer "hoop-la" weekends in most mid-western states. But not sure that the two above would be *that* exciting. How about a couple of old timers like Carter/Ford? They were rather interesting on Meet the Press this last week. Perhaps they could give their opinions on the 'candidates'.??

Excellent idea. Our town has heritage that no one does anything with. Clean the town up, revamp the business district into attractive shops and accentuate the landmarks and heritage of this town. The town would then move forward instead of being mostly dormant.

I applaud your challenge and think it a refreshing change to the ho-hum-drum pablum the press usually feeds us. I would also suggest that this same challenge be extended to every federal candidate for office that represents you. Perhaps cities and towns throughout Illinois could join Freeport in sponsoring "Freeport Challenge" style debates for their candidates during election years. These debates could be as inclusive as possible. What a great idea for breathing life and honest purpose back into the elective process. CARRY ON!!!

Dear Fellows Citizens:
Any debate format which allows for subtantive digression upon the issues and for spontaneous interaction with the people is a good thing for democracy. I commend you for the challenge and wish you well with it.
America is at a critical crossroads in this election cycle. If ever the people deserved a return to substance on the issues, it is now. May your wonderful idea blossom into results.
Sincerely,
Charles Hendrickson,
Democrat for Congress

I think the effort is definately worthwhile and has
some real potential if others in the community can be made to believe
the debate can happen here. Freeport residents tend to be skeptical, though,
and there will always be that group who never saw a good idea that wasn't
theirs.
